If you are a developer just about to start out your career in mobile web development, you may be faced with a dilemma: Which platform should I choose: The iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7, or Symbian or Blackberry? Let’s face it, there are way too many platforms for mobile these days and to determine which one will win the race or which one will be the most profitable, will be difficult. Nokia remains the most purchased smart phone in the world. iPhone has millions of users and together with the iPad, it provides a stiff competition to Nokia. Windows Phone 7 has just started out and although it is getting rave reviews, it is difficult to say what kind of a market it will be able to capture.
The facts and the certainties:
- iPhone and iPad is going to continue to grow at least for the next couple of years. There are already rumors doing the rounds of iPad 2. However, with the way things are looking, and the attitude that Apple is adopting, it seems to be digging its own grave. I will not bet on the iOS growing further after 2 years time unless something dramatic happens.
- Android has grown and will continue to grow. Android based mobile phones are going to outsell every other OS in the next 3-4 years unless something dramatic happens in between which is my third point. Android based tablets are also going to give the iPad a run for its money since there is every possibility of “damn cheap tablets” coming out in the next few months which will even give smart phones a competition.
- Windows Phone 7′s only bet is that Nokia will eventually choose it over Android. That will actually be a good thing for both Nokia and Windows Phone 7 since Symbian’s time is surely up and Nokia would not like to become just another handset manufacturer selling Android, the very OS, responsible for its eventual decline in the market share. And if that does not happen, then Windows Phone 7 may not have a very bright future.
Bottomline: If you are a developer, your safest bet is to make apps for Android. Making them is cheaper than making them for the iOS since that requires you to purchase a Mac computer and an additional $99 to test your app in your device and then submitting it to the app store.
I think Android is the best ever and I don’t buy anything else.

I will always stand and stick by Nokia no matter how many of my friends have the iphone, all they do is play angry birds anyway! What a waste of money and resources.

May be Nokia is more efficient but it would be not so easy to switch to Nokia after 2 years of iphone. It’s a kind of addiction
I know what you mean. I have an iPod touch. I am addicted to even that! There’s iPhone and there is everything else. No doubt about it!
However java remains stand alone!
How about doing it for Windows Phone? Looks like market share will be on the rise because of the nokia deal & the competition is not nearly as heavy as with iOS or Android

If you want to become a really good mobile developer you should know all platforms. At least the basis of each of them. But Android will be the most exceptable platform to begin with. It is an open and compatatively easy one.
Nokia is far different than android, I think nokia should go for using android platform.
Oh my goodness! an incredible article dude. Thanks Nonetheless I’m experiencing concern with ur rss . Don’t know why Unable to subscribe to it. Is there anybody getting identical rss drawback? Anyone who is aware of kindly respond. Thnkx
Bottom line is the App Store from Apple makes developers a lot more money than Android store and will continue to do so for the coming years.

Great article you’ve done. But Android appeals more nowadays than having Symbian and etc. And Nokia should stop using Symbian OS.

Siddharth, you bring up a valid point. Android has indeed earned the reputation of being the most accessible and user friendly platform out there. Besides the affordability of Android tablets and mobile phones, it has become the more popular choice because it is not brand exclusive. This creates a strong appeal to the mass market because Android users feel like they belong among a larger community who swear by it. The Iphone and Ipad offer exclusivity, but in turn creates a fear of incompatibility with millions of Android (and other platform) users worldwide. It really is a matter of choosing between what your target market is as a web developer when it comes to making the right choice. ‘Mobile App Developer’ suggested on his comment that you should know all platforms well, and I can’t agree more.

Android will definitely be a winner. It has its market share to those that are gadget geeks and those who really into tinkering stuff. But the Iphone still has a backbone of a great share on the market. And most consumer is really into Ihone. But soon when the great features of Android is absorb by he masses that will be the start of the decline of Iphone.

Whatever said and done..Apple is the pioneer and will be the leader in smartphone industry
I think iOS developers are generally more successful than Android developers….but I personally use Android. Apple’s products are too expensive and I don’t need them.
